Zimsterne - German Cinnamon Star Cookies
Zimtsterne translates in English as “cinnamon stars” from “zimt” meaning cinnamon and “sterne” meaning stars. It is relatively unknown the origin Zimtsterne cookies but the first written mention dates back to 1538. It took about two hundred years for these cookies to appear in German cookbooks. Do you wonder why? Cinnamon was an expensive and rare spice at that time. Imported almonds were food for only royalty.
